The Chicago area is under a flood watch until Thursday morning, as more heavy rain could arrive in the area in coming hours.
According to the National Weather Service, the entire area, including the city of Chicago and its surrounding suburbs, will be under the flood watch until 4 a.m. Thursday.
Just hours after a line of showers and thunderstorms rolled through the area, another round of showers and storms are expected to arrive in the evening, and the rain could persist into the early hours of Thursday morning.
At times, rainfall rates of up to 1-to-2 inches per hour are possible, leaving urban areas particularly susceptible to flooding, according to the National Weather Service.
Other parts of the area that received heavy rain on Wednesday could also be at risk, especially in low-lying areas and along streams and creeks.
Once the rain moves out, the Chicago area will have a dry period of weather on Thursday, with temperatures rising again into the upper-80s and low-90s. There will also be plenty of humidity, and as a result an approaching cold front will have plenty of fuel to fire up severe thunderstorms again Thursday evening, according to the NBC 5 Storm Team.
The entire Chicago area will be at an “enhanced” risk of severe weather Thursday, with all hazards on the table, including strong tornadoes, heavy rain, damaging wind gusts and hail.
