Ghana Could Go Into Second Lockdown

Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo has announced that his nation could go into a second partial lockdown due to rising cases of coronavirus.

Mr. Akufo-Addo made this known in his  Update No.22 on Sunday night, January 17, 2021.

According to the President, Coronavirus cases in the country were once again on the rise, giving reason to contemplate re-imposing a lockdown.

“We do not want to go back to the days of partial lockdowns, which had a negative impact on our economy and on our way of life,” Mr Akufo-Addo reported.

The Ghanaian leader said “but should that become necessary, i.e., should the number of active cases continue to increase at the current rate, I will have no option but to re-impose these restrictions because it is better to be safe than to be sorry.”

As a result, he appealed “so together, let us all ensure that we respect the protocols.”

    Cases

President Nana Akufo-Addo has reported a sharp rise in Coronavirus in Ghana.

He said “particularly worrying is the fact that the Ghana Health Service is recording, on the average, two hundred (200) new cases of Covid infections daily.”

The President noted that since his update No. 21 was delivered a few weeks ago, Ghana has been recording higher daily infections rate.

He said active cases of Coronavirus since his last update has increased from a little over 920 cases to about 1,924.

Covid19 treatment Centres have now moved from being having zero patients to having an upsurge, according to him.

He said “the number of patients requiring hospitalization and intensive care is rising. The number of severe cases, which stood at eighteen (18) a week ago, has increased sharply to one hundred and twenty (120).”

Also, he noted that there 33 critical Coronavirus cases.

    Histories of Covid-19 Patients

He stated that “detailed investigations of the cases indicated that, apart from arriving passengers at our airport who tested positive, infected persons have recent histories of attending parties, weddings, end of year office programmes, family get-togethers, and funerals.”

The President noted that “at these gatherings, most of them abandoned the use of the masks, and were engaged in actions that led to them contracting the virus.”

He said statistics from the Ghana Health Service showed that the considerable number of persons who were severely ill were, surprisingly, relatively youthful persons, with no previous underlying health conditions.

Ensure Rigorous Enforcement Of Covid19 Protocols

Mr. Akufo-Addo directed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ensure the rigorous enforcement of the Coronavirus protocols.

He stated that  he has asked the IGP to ensure that police officers ensure the wearing of face masks in public places.

He said the the police service and other security services will work to ensure that night clubs, and pubs and beaches are closed down immediately.
