The Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, has stated that Ghana is losing an estimated Gh¢ 300 million annually in the online sports betting sector.
He made this known as he presented the country’s 2021 Budget Statement and Economic Policy themed: Completion, Consolidation and Continuation.
As a result, he said a Gaming Tax was being introduced.
He disclosed that there was an influx of online sports betting in Ghana, and as such it was necessary for Government to tax these money-making activities.
“Mr Speaker, gaming has become a major income earner all across the globe and a significant source of Government revenue. The influx of online betting and automation of the once totally manual process has changed the character of revenue sources from that industry,” he noted during the Budget presentation that lasted for about three-hours-thirty-minutes.

He revealed that the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry for the Interior will co-supervise the gaming industry.
According to him, the two ministries will consult with stakeholders to formulate a comprehensive policy to improve revenue mobilization from online sports betting.
