Ghana Suspends 64th Independence Day Parade Over Sharply Rising Coronavirus Cases, Deaths

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced the suspension of this year’s Independence Day Parade.

The 64th Independence anniversary falls on March 6, 2021.

But unlike in previous years, schools nationwide will not be allowing students to parade, according to the GES.

GES made this known in a letter addressed to all regional directors of Education.

The letter obtained by African Entertainment revealed that GES’s management had received a message from the Office of the Chief of Staff at the Presidency “directing the suspension of this year’s 6th March celebration and all its related activities in the regions, Metropolitan/Municipal/District Assemblies across the country due to the high prevalence rate of Covid19 in the country.”

Ghana gained Independence from Great Britain on March 6, 1957, after several years of colonialism.

Since gaining Independence, there had been yearly parades on March 6.

But with the country so far recording about 542 Covid19 related deaths and 76,492 confirmed cases, it has become necessary to suspend the parade for 2021.
