Hotel Rwanda ‘Hero’ Appears In Court Over Terror, Kidnapping, Murder Charges

The trial of Paul Rusesabagina has started in Kigali, Rwanda.

Mr Rusesabagina who was portrayed as a hero in the Hollywood movie, Hotel Rwanda, Mr Rusesabagina appeared in court on Wednesday, February 17, 2021, for the start of his trial over alleged acts of murder, kidnap and terrorism.

At least 20 other individuals are facing the same charges alongside Mr. Rusesabagina.

Reports say he was accused of supporting the activities of the National Liberation Forces (FLN), which is the militant wing of his Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD) party. He was also accused of kidnap and murder.

Mr Rusesabagina was arrested in August 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and sent to Rwanda.

His lawyers have denied the charges leveled against him.

Hotel Rwanda was about the 1994 Rwandan genocide which killed over 800,000 people.

In the movie, Mr Rusesabagina, a hotel manager, led a happy life with his wife and children in Rwanda. He displayed immense courage by saving the lives of many helpless refugees during a communal war. Hotel Rwanda was initially released on December 22, 2004.
