The Chicago Park District summer camps are highly sought after, but even if you can’t sign up, there are still options residents will have.
The camps begin their enrollment period Monday at 9AM for parks west of California Avenue and all virtual programs. The sign-up period begins Tuesday at 9AM for all parks east of California Avenue, according to the city.
If parents don’t get their children into a park district camp and turn to a private camp, it may come with sticker shock. But it’s important to know you don’t always have to pay the full amount.
According to the American Camp Association, parents should try contacting camps they’re interested in and ask about scholarships, financial aid based on income, and payment plan options. Some camps also offer sibling discounts.
If parents have a Dependent Care FSA you can use that money to help cover the cost of summer camp, but there are requirements.
- The child must be under the age of 13
- Only day camps are eligible
- Use pre-tax FSA funds to save up to 30% on kids’ summer camp tuition fees.

“Families can use ACA’s Find a Camp tool to help identify the best program for their child and their budget. If a camp fills up or feels priced out, it’s important to be flexible and be open to other options. There are plenty of good camps on the lower price range, such as YMCA, Boys and Girls Club of America, and 4-H programs, with some even offering free programming.”
