A Kankakee County corrections officer and a second individual were killed in a Sunday morning crash.
According to the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office, Officer Luis Barrera died Sunday morning after a vehicle he was traveling in crashed in Momence, a community approximately 10 miles east of Kankakee.
In addition to the two fatalities, there were also two other individuals who suffered serious injuries, according to authorities.
“This is a tremendous loss for our agency and for all who know Officer Barrera,” said Sheriff Mike Downey in a statement. “We ask that you keep Officer Barrera’s family, friends, coworkers, and all those affected by this tragedy in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
According to a press release, Barrera had served with the department since February 2025, and prior to that had served in the armed forces of the United States.
No further information was immediately available on the crash.
