Eighteen dogs were seized in what authorities described as an illegal dogfighting operation in rural Kankakee County, according to sheriff’s officials.
Shortly before midnight on Friday, deputies executed a search warrant near 3000 South and 13700 East Road in Pembroke Township regarding an illegal dogfighting operation, the Kankakee County Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities said 18 dogs were found at the property, including some that were in “extremely poor health.”
The animals were placed in the custody of Kankakee County Animal Control. Multiple dogs were suffering from health-related issues due to neglect and possible abuse, Kari Laird, director of animal control, said in a news release.
No arrests have been made, Sheriff Mike Downey said in the release.
However, he said the investigation remains active, explaining “additional information could develop as investigators continue reviewing evidence.”
