American Pop-star, Lady Gaga, has been presented with the coveted Yolanda Denise King “Higher Ground” Award.
The prestigious award was presented to Gaga by Oscar Winner and musician, Jennifer Hudson, on Saturday, January 16, 2021.
It was part of a number of awards presented to individuals and organizations this year at the 2021 Beloved Community Awards organized by The King Center.
Lady Gaga took to social media to express her delight about the award.
In a post sighted by African Entertainment on her Official Facebook page, Lady Gaga wrote: “this award is a huge honor I am so humbled. Since I first heard from The King Center I’ve been working hard on what to say – almost one month.”
Annually, The King Center celebrates the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, an American civil rights icon, with a number of activities, among them being the Beloved Community Awards.
The Beloved Community Awards recognize individuals and organizations that demonstrate “excellence in leadership,” “pursue social justice.”
The Awards also honor individuals and organizations committed to “creating…a more just, humane, peaceful world,” in line with the values and principles of the slain Dr. King.
Who Was Yolanda Denis King?
In 2007, it would be recalled, Yolanda Denise King, Dr. King’s eldest child, passed away.
Yolanda, by profession, was an activist, actress and author.
As an actress, she appeared in movies including Ghosts of Mississippi. She ran a production company named Higher Ground.
Higher Ground was dedicated to teaching people to embrace diversity and unity.
Why Lady Gaga won?
Lady Gaga has in recent months especially over the course of 2020, spearheaded a number of social interventions including Black Lives Matter. She has also pushed for a law aimed at stopping “rape culture” at American universities.
