
The new President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema has sacked a number of Zambia’s senior military commanders.
He has also sacked the head of Zambia police. According to local media reports, Mr Hichilema has vowed to make the security agencies more accountable to Zambians.
Late on Sunday, August 29, 2021, Mr Hichilema announced the appointments of new commanders of the Zambian army, the air force and the national service and their deputies.
He also announced the appointment of a new inspector general of police.
Again, he announced that all regional Zambian police commanders have been relieved of their duties.
According to him, the new appointees in the military and police “must have the interest of the people at heart and serve the country diligently while ensuring human rights, freedoms and liberties are respected”.
The Zambian President urged the police to carry out proper checks before detaining suspects and that “no one should be arrested before investigations are concluded”.
