A selfless neighbor helped rescue several people from a burning home Monday morning in an incredible act of heroism.
The fast-moving blaze swept through three homes in the 4700 block of Fulton Avenue in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighborhood Monday, according to fire officials.
Deny Conley lives nearby and said he was driving in the area when he saw smoke.
“The entire back house was ablaze,” said Conley. “I was able to get in, bang on the doors and let them know their house was on fire. I am a first responder, an aviation security officer at O’Hare Airport, so I am used to things like this. I am just glad we were able to get everybody out. We just tried to do what we can for the community.”
The Chicago Fire Department said the blaze was challenging and additional resources had to be brought in to extinguish it. At least 25 people are now without a home according to officials, and they are getting assistance from the American Red Cross.
It’s unknown if the homes had working smoke alarms. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
