The roof of a suburban apartment building was partially blown off by strong storms that hammered the Chicago area with wind gusts up to 80 mph on Wednesday, video showed.
Aerial video of suburban Stickney captured by NBC Chicago Sky 5 showed damaged buildings, downed trees and scattered debris across the area.
The roof of an apartment near West Pershing Road and Ridgeland Avenue on the border of Stickney and Berwyn could be seen partially hanging off the side of the building. Debris was scattered around the area, with some landing in a parking lot of the building and nearby roadway.
Authorities at the scene told NBC Chicago the entire building was being evacuated, and all residents will be displaced, though no injuries were reported.
Residents were told to gather essential belongings and that the building will be closed for several days, according to the Stickney Fire Department.
Stickney police said in a post on social media that their officers were “actively responding to storm-related calls throughout the village” and warned that response times to non-emergency calls may be longer than usual.
“If you experience a power outage or observe downed power lines, please contact your utility provider directly to report the issue. If downed wires, trees, or storm damage are causing a fire, sparking, or an immediate threat to life or property, call 911 immediately,” SPD said in the post. “Residents wishing to report property damage related to the storm are encouraged to come to the Stickney Police Department to file a report later this evening. We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we work to keep our community safe.”
