Basic schools in the Greater Accra region have recorded high attendance of pupils and students upon resuming from the close to a year long coronavirus induced break.
A visit by the Ghana Education Service and UNICEF to some of the schools during the celebration of “My First Day at School” revealed pupils-students attendance had been more than 80 per cent.
At the Nima Cluster of Schools, classes were fully in session as at 0900 hours when staff from GES visited the school on Tuesday.
Some of the schools visited by the GES and UNICEF were Prisons Basic school, Bethany Methodist school, Nima Cluster of Schools.
School authorities told the media that they started preparation towards re-opening from Friday and major ground works, especially cleaning of the classrooms and the compound were done before Monday.
They said the stage was therefore set for immediate start of teaching and learning, adding they had enough Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for both staff and students.
The media observed veronica buckets filled to the brim with water, hand sanitizers, bottles of liquid soaps and tissue papers which were donated by UNICEF had been placed at vantage points and the students were wearing their nose masks.
Speaking to the pressmen, Lawyer Anthony Boateng, Deputy Director General of GES, in charge of Management Services, urged parents to encourage their wards to strictly adapt wearing of the nose masks and observe the other health and safety protocols from home.
