Students are being asked to assist with the idea of establishing Illinois’ official state colors as part of a new project.
The project, spearheaded by students at Pekin Community High School and East Aurora High School, is aiming to establish the state’s official colors, representing its rural and urban areas, along with a color to represent the entire state.
State Rep. Travis Weaver is helping the students with the project, and it has gained backing from Democrats as well, including State Rep. Barbara Hernandez.
“Our hope is that when we get thousands of surveys completed by students, we can go back to the General Assembly, file the legislation and then get a bill passed that reflects the will of the students,” Weaver told NBC affiliate WEEK.
The survey will be available through May 1, according to officials. Students in grades kindergarten through 12th grade are being asked to vote in three different categories: Rural, Urban and Statewide.
The rural category features “Prairie Gold,” “Farmers Market Lavender,” “Soybean Green,” “Fox Valley Auburn,” and “Harvest Gold Marigold.”
The urban category includes “Maxwell Street Blue,” “Bean Silver,” “Capitol Dome Red,” “Railway Connection,” and “Ivy Green.”
Finally, the statewide category includes “Lincoln Penny Copper,” “Shawnee Canopy,” “Voting Violet,” “Illiniwek Longhouse,” and “Cardinal Red.”
