A great weekend is in store, with seasonably warm highs in the 70s – and potentially the 80s in some areas – setting the stage for a welcome warm-up as June arrives.
Saturday started off cool, with temperatures in the 50s, before warming into the 70s by the afternoon, especially near the lake.
NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Claudia Olech said a cold front will likely move in, bringing a slight breeze and some cooler temperatures, along with a beach hazard.
If you’re thinking about going to the beach this weekend, you might want to reconsider. High waves between 3 and 6 feet tall and dangerous currents are possible between 7 a.m. through 9 p.m. along the Illinois shoreline of Lake Michigan.
Northwest Indiana will be under a moderate swimming risk.
Winds, meanwhile, could pick up slightly as the evening approaches, though it likely won’t be anything drastic; it may just be a bit breezier along the lake.
Temperatures will feel nice and mild, with readings sitting in the low-to-mid 70s in the afternoon. Communities further inland will be looking at warmer, 80-degree temperatures.
Later in the day, some upper-level clouds may move through, though we’ll see glimpses of sunshine. Temperatures will likely drop into the 60s by around 9 p.m., followed by readings in the 50s overnight into Sunday morning.
Olech said models are hinting at a few rain chances toward the end of the weekend, but most of the region should remain dry.
Rain activity will likely hold off to the west as it tries to move closer to Chicago, but then fizzle out.
Afterward, a substantial warm-up is on the way.
Temperatures will likely sit in the mid-to-upper 70s through Tuesday – before jumping into the 80s, where they’re expected to stay as the first week of June arrives.
Low chances for rain may arrive on Friday, which will almost certainly be a hot one.
Olech said we may push into the 90s both Thursday and Friday, and temperatures will stay in the 80s through at least the following Monday.
