The Chicago White Sox picked up their second straight win over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday, and did so in comeback fashion at Rate Field.
The White Sox got a home run from designated hitter Randall Grichuk and a sacrifice fly from Miguel Vargas in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Seranthony Dominguez slammed the door on Seattle to secure a 2-1 win for the South Siders.
The Mariners got a strong start from Logan Gilbert as he allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters in six innings, but it wasn’t enough as the White Sox got three scoreless innings form their bullpen en route to a victory.
Things didn’t start out well for the White Sox in the game as Seattle jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Randy Arozarena singled to center field, and Julio Rodriguez ended up scoring on an error by Tristan Peters, giving Seattle a 1-0 lead.
The White Sox began threatening in the bottom of the seventh inning as they managed to load the bases with two outs after Edgar Quero was hit by a pitch, but Peters grounded out to second base to end the threat.
The eighth inning proved to be more profitable, as Grichuk led off the frame with a home run to left field to tie the game at 1-1, then Drew Romo laced a double to right field to put the go-ahead run in scoring position.
After advancing to third on a sacrifice bunt, Romo scored on a sacrifice fly from Vargas, giving Chicago a 2-1 lead and Dominguez a chance to nail down a save.
The Mariners wouldn’t go away quietly however, as Connor Joe and JP Crawford both singled with one out. Rob Refsnyder then walked, loading up the bases with one away.
Dominguez was able to work his way out of trouble, forcing Cole Young to pop out on the infield and then getting Brendan Donovan to ground out, securing the win for the White Sox.
Chicago will have a day off before taking on the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night, with first pitch set for 6:40 p.m.
