A man was struck and killed while biking in Chicago on Friday, authorities said.
Around 4:40 p.m., a 35-year-old man was biking on the 3200 block of South Halsted Street in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood when he was struck by a vehicle, police said.
He was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
A mangled bike could be seen in the roadway in the aftermath of the crash, with blood nearby. Though there is a bike lane on the stretch of Halsted where the crash occurred, it is not concrete protected.
Witnesses told NBC Chicago the cyclist was riding in a bike lane when the driver of a car opened a door in front of him, causing him to lose control before he was struck by a semi-truck driver who was traveling behind him before the initial collision. Witnesses also said both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Police did not immediately confirm the information provided by witnesses, nor did they state whether citations were issued to any drivers at the scene.
Chicago Municipal Code prohibits drivers from opening their door “on the side available to moving traffic unless and until it is reasonably safe to do so, and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic.”
An investigation remains ongoing.
No additional information was immediately available.
