An opinion poll has shown that a whopping 87 percent of Republicans still want former President Donald J. Trump to hold an elected office despite being impeached twice as President.
The Quinnipiac University national poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday, during and after the acquittal of Mr Trump in his Senate impeachment trial.
It also showed that in contrast, 55% of all respondents in the survey wanted Mr Trump to be barred from holding elective office in the future.
Mr Trump was acquitted of one count of inciting the deadly January 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol by right wing extremists and his supporters who were allegedly seeking to disrupt congressional certification of President Joe Biden’s Electoral College victory
According to the poll results, three out of four Republicans want to see Mr. Trump play a big role in the GOP going forward.
Only a fifth of Republicans questioned in the survey said they do not want the former president to continue to play a dominate role in the party.
According to Quinnipiac University polling analyst, Tim Malloy, “He (Trump) may be down, but he is certainly not out of favor with the GOP. Twice impeached, vilified by Democrats in the trial, and virtually silenced by social media … despite it all, Donald Trump keeps a solid foothold in the Republican Party.”
The Quinnipiac University poll questioned 1,056 adults. The University says there was a sampling error of plus or minus threw percentage points.
