Heather Mack’s motion for release prior to trial has been denied by Judge Matthew Kennelly.
Mack along with her boyfriend Tommy Schafer were charged with conspiracy in the 2017 killing of her mother, Sheila von Wiese during a trip to in Bali.
Mack was arrested upon her return to Chicago in November 2021. Prior to she served more than seven years in an Indonesian prison for her role in the killing. During her time in the Indonesian prison Mack gave birth.
Diana Roque Ellis states she should have custody of daughter of Heather Mack, while her paternal grandmother Kia Walker, said late last year she would sue to get visitation and permanent guardianship of her granddaughter.
Chicago woman, Heather Mack served more than seven years in an Indonesian prison for killing her mother. The murder took place at a luxury resort on the island of Bali. The courts indicted Mack on murder conspiracy charges in the United States and taken into federal custody.
FBI agents took Heather Mack, 26, into custody on her arrival at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday morning, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago.
Her daughter, Estelle Schaefer, is now 7 years old.
Tommy Schaefer, Heather Mack’s then boyfriend and accomplice fathered Estelle. Both father and daughter deported to the US last year after Heather’s release from prison.
Mack’s Defense attorney Michael Leonard said his client has behaved well while in custody. Arguing she would not pose a flight risk. Additionally, nor would she be a public threat, should she be released on bond.
Leonard used Mack’s ‘loving’ relationship with her seven-year-old daughter Stella as evidence to bolster his argument.
However, US District Judge Matthew Kennelly refused to release Mack, saying that there are ‘plenty of reasons to believe she would pose a danger to others.’
Leonard said he and his client were ‘disappointed’ that Kennelly denied her bail.
