Severe weather is expected in the Chicago area Tuesday evening, with strong tornadoes and “giant” hail possible in some parts of Illinois.
Chicago-area residents should expect scattered thunderstorms throughout the evening, some of which could be severe, according to the National Weather Service. Damaging winds and hail are possible, as are some tornadoes.
NWS gave a look at the timing of the storms in a social media post on Tuesday.
“Note that scattered storms could develop ahead of these storms south of I-80 after 8 PM CDT,” NWS said in the post. “Remain on guard for severe weather this evening!”
The weather, that is moving east-northeast into Illinois from Iowa and Wisconsin, is expected to arrive over northwest Illinois around 7 p.m.
Rockford and surrounding areas will see the storm first from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., followed by Dixon, DeKalb, Elgin and Waukegan from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. and then lastly Chicago, Aurora and communities along I-88 will see the storms from roughly 9 p.m. to 11 p.m., according to NWS.
The severe weather threat is a two to three out of five, according to NWS.
If you hear thunder, you should move indoors, NWS warned. Thunderstorms may bring lightning, localized downpours and gusty winds.
NWS also warned “giant hail” could fall in parts of Illinois, Iowa and Wisconsin in a post on social media around 3:45 p.m.
