National Weather Service officials have confirmed at least two more tornado touchdowns during Friday’s outbreak of severe weather.
According to the NWS Chicago office, the additional tornadoes were both rated as EF-1 twisters, impacting parts of Livingston County near Fairbury and near Mendota in LaSalle County.
Those tornadoes were added to the seven that were already confirmed by NWS officials, including an EF-2 tornado that struck Lena, packing wind speeds of up to 130 miles per hour and traveling nearly nine miles.
According to the Enhanced Fujita Scale, an EF-1 tornado packs three-second wind gusts between 86 and 110 miles per hour. The NWS has not yet released the estimated wind speeds of the new tornadoes confirmed Sunday.
Roofs were left damaged and trees with fewer limbs after severe storms rolled through Lena, Illinois on Friday.
In recent days, the National Weather Service confirmed three tornadoes had touched down in Winnebago County, including EF-1 twisters in Harrison and Roscoe. An EF-U tornado with unknown wind speeds also touched down in Pecatonica.
EF-1 tornadoes were also reported in Gibson City and Buckley in Ford and Iroquois counties, according to NWS Chicago officials.
Final damage reports are expected in coming days.
