All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads. But some are sleeping on floors, couches or sharing beds out of necessity.
That’s why a local non-profit, fueled by donations and volunteers, strives to make sure every child has a bed to sleep in.
“We literally build and deliver beds for children in need,” said Dave King with the Oak Forest Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace.
The group is 100% donation- and volunteer-based.
Beds, mattresses, sheets and comforters are all provided to children in need. On a recent build-out, as they are called, volunteers built dozens of beds in a church parking lot in Midlothian.
“We serve as victims of fire, flooding, domestic abuse, relocation, financial struggles. We always say there are so many reasons that can lead to the need for a bed, but every child deserves a bed of their own.”
The chapter started in 2018. This year, they will build their 1,000th bed.
“This is a service that is priceless,” said volunteer Dolly Cooper. “This is something that you can’t put money on. And it feels good to be part of it.”
“We continue to do it because we want to make sure that no kids sleep on the floor in our town,” King said. “We have an amazing team of volunteers, and together we’re making a difference, one bed and one child at a time.”
Sleep in Heavenly Peace welcomes volunteers to join their effort.
