A teen has been arrested and charged with attempted murder and weapons charges after he allegedly plotted to carry out a shooting at a suburban elementary school.
According to police in suburban Plainfield, deputies were called to a home on Helmar Lane on May 22 at approximately 12:50 p.m. for reports of a “male suicidal suspect.”
When they arrived, they found that the teen had been restrained by a family member when they discovered the juvenile was armed with a weapon.
It was then reported that the teen had been plotting to carry out a mass shooting at Grand Prairie Elementary School, and the family member had intervened to stop the shooting from taking place.
The teen admitted to the intended attack to police at the scene according to officials. Officers collected a handgun, multiple loaded magazines, knives, an accelerant and gloves from the residence.
The teen was then taken to an area hospital for physical and psychological evaluation, and on Thursday authorities announced the juvenile had been released from the hospital and was taken into custody at a local juvenile detention center.
According to police, the teen has been charged with attempted first-degree murder, as well as attempting to make a terrorist threat. He is also facing numerous weapons charges in connection with the alleged plot.
The suspect in the case will face a pretrial detention hearing this week, according to police.
