The Chicago Cubs’ home winning streak just keeps rolling along after they swept the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday.
The win gives the Cubs yet another perfect homestand after they swept the Arizona Diamondbacks over the weekend, and they’ve now won a staggering 15 consecutive games at Wrigley Field.
In fact, the Cubs will go more than a month without a single home loss, as their next home game isn’t scheduled until May 18.
According to MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, the winning streak is putting the Cubs into rarified air.
The 15-game winning streak is now the Cubs’ second-longest home winning streak since at least 1900, trailing only the 1935 season that saw the Cubs win 18 consecutive contests at the Friendly Confines.
According to Langs’ research, the winning streak is the Cubs’ eighth of at least 14 games or more. Of the seasons where the Cubs had those streaks, they made the postseason in five of them, winning four National League pennants and then a division title in 2008.
MLB.com also says the Cubs are the first team since the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers to have two winning streaks of nine games or more in the first 38 games of a season.
Finally, Marquee Sports Network reports that the team’s back-to-back perfect 7-0 homestands mark the first time since they began playing at Wrigley Field in 1916 that they’ve had consecutive perfect homestands of at least seven wins or more.
Friday could mark a big day for the Cubs, as they’ll be going for their 10th consecutive win. It would actually be their second 10-game winning streak of the season, as they had won 10 in a row in mid-to-late April. Overall, the Cubs are now 19-3 in their last 22 games, and have built up a four-game lead in the National League Central.
The Cubs will now embark on a nine-game road trip through Texas, Atlanta and then the South Side of Chicago, where they’ll face the White Sox next weekend.
The team’s next home series will come starting on May 18 when they open a three-game set against the Milwaukee Brewers.
