
A ground stop was issued for planes arriving to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Tuesday afternoon due to thunderstorms, according to the FAA.
Around 2:50 p.m., a ground stop was issued for all departures to O’Hare as thunderstorms rolled through the area. The ground stop is scheduled to continue until 4 p.m. but the probability of extension was medium, according to the FAA.
The ground stop issued at 2:50 p.m. was allowed to expire, and then a second ground stop was issued for planes arriving to O’Hare Airport at 5:04 p.m., according to the FAA. The cause of the second ground stop was again thunderstorms.
The second ground stop is set to expire at 6:30 p.m. but the FAA says there is a medium probability of extension.
Flights leaving O’Hare were delayed an average of 75 minutes due to the storms as of 5:40 p.m., according to the FAA.
As of 6:20 p.m., flights in or out of Midway Airport were not impacted by the storms.
The storms are expected to slowly move to the south after arriving in the city and the southern suburbs as the afternoon commute gets underway.
