You may find some Illinois offices and buildings closed Thursday, but that’s not because its President’s Day.
While it’s not a federal holiday, many government and city offices may be closed Feb. 12 in honor of Lincoln’s Birthday. According to the City of Chicago, city officials will be closed Thursday.
Many state offices are also closed, including courts, the Illinois Treasurer’s Office, and the Illinois Department of Central Management Services, state sites showed.
The holiday also means all DMV facilities will be closed, the Illinois Secretary of State said.
Some libraries are closed Thursday as well.
“All CPL locations are closed Thursday, February 12 for Abraham Lincoln’s birthday,” Chicago Public Libraries said in its calendar. Many other libraries across the Chicago suburbs will remain open.
Unlike Lincoln’s Birthday, Presidents Day, which falls on Monday, Feb. 16, is a federal holiday. That means DMV offices will again be closed Monday, along with government offices, banks and the stock market. Mail will also not be delivered Monday due to the holiday.
Lincoln’s Birthday is also an official school holiday in Illinois, though districts can observe President’s Day instead.
Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States who was originally from Illinois, was born on February 12. The holiday was first established in 1885 after initially being implemented by an act of Congress in 1879.
